  • How to use our Roof Pitch Calculator:

Roof Ground Dimensions: First, you will need to measure your roof, which will be rather easy to do. Take a measuring tape and measure the outside perimeter of your house, from corner to corner. If your roof has overhangs, which most roofs do, add the with of overhangs to your ground measurments. Now that you have the roof foot print, plug it into the roof pitch calculator, making sure that the width is your gable side, or the side where you can see the roof solpe.

Roof Rise: To measure the roof rise, or the distance from the base of the roof to the top of the roof, you will need to either get up on the ladder and physically measure it with the measuring tape, or you can estimate it off the ground. In most cases, you can estimate roof rise by measuring your siding exposure - distance between the courses of siding - and multiplying it by the number of courses from roof base to the top of the roof. Most clapboard and vinyl siding will have a 4" exposure, so 3 courses will equal 1 foot. Don't forget to add the width of the rake board to the roof rise measurement.

Once you have the roof footprint and the roof rise, you can quickly calculate your roof area and roof pitch as well as total roof size and an estimated cost to install a standing seam metal roof, as well as steel or aluminum metal shingles roofing system.

If you want to learn more about measuring and calculating roof slope, then refer to the roof pitch measuring guide, which will explain how and why the roof pitch is used by roofing contractors, builders and architects when building a new home, and specifying roofing materials for the job. It also provides a mathematical formala to calculate / estimate roof pitch. You will also find roof pitch multiplier table, which will help you quickly estimate any roof.
